Domestic Abuse

also referred to as domestic violence can be explained as:

An incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening, degrading and violent behaviour or abuse.

It concerns people aged 16 or over who are or have been intimate partners or family members and it can happen regardless of your gender.

Domestic abuse can take many forms, but is not limited to only one of following types of abuse:

  • physical
  • economic
  • stalking and harassment
  • emotional
  • coercive control
  • restriction of movements
  • sexual
  • psychological
  • financial
  • spiritual and harmful practices
  • patriarchy & misogyny
  • cultural barriers

It can also include what is known as 'honour' based violence, female genital mutilation (FGM) and forced marriage.

Domestic violence affects people of every class, gender, level of wealth, geography, age, race, sexuality and disability.

The forms of abuse can begin at any stage of the relationship and may continue after the relationship has ended.

It is a pattern of intentional and calculated controlling and aggressive behaviour to exercise power and control within a relationship.
